The Mustangs played an excellent first half of soccer against the Morton Ranch Mavericks. Only ten minutes into the match, Christian Putallaz played a ball to Jake Reedy who finished the opportunity to the back post. The Mustangs kept up the pressure for the remainder of the half and forced the Maverick keeper to make several nice saves. In addition to the strong keeper play, the Mustangs were denied scoring by the crossbar and a defensive clearance in front of an otherwise open goal. Against the run of play, the Mavericks tied up the match, when a free kick took a fortunate bounce off of the wall and set up a point blank shot. The Mavericks found inspiration in the second half, and the Mustangs were forced on their heels for the majority of the half. The possession and pace of the Mavericks play eventually paid off and they took the lead with a well hit volley from just outside of the corner of the eighteen yard box. With about twelve minutes left, the Mustangs went on the attack and were disappointed when they were off sides on what appeared to be the tying goal. Minutes later, the Mustangs played a ball across the face of the goal and beat the keeper, but the shot went high. The Mustangs continued to push, but ran out of time. Man of the Match ~ Jake Reedy
03/06/09 District: Katy Tie 2-2 - District Record 2-4-2; Overall Record - 8-6-7
After the slow start against Mayde Creek, the Mustangs were determined to get off to a good start against the Katy Tigers. 10 minutes into the match the Mustangs early pressure paid off when Steven Vanden Heuvel punched in a rebound after a spinning shot by Barnaby Fryer eluded the Katy keeper. Reminiscent of the first match between these two teams, the first half concluded with a one goal advantage for the Mustangs. And like the second half of the previous encounter, there were more goals to come. Only 4 minutes into the second half, the Tigers scored their first goal with a penalty kick to tie the match. In the 55th minute, Vanden Heuvel got on the end of a free kick from Marshal Bond to score his second goal of the match and put the Mustang’s back up by one. But in the 63 minute, the Tigers scored the final goal of the match from a back post header off of a corner kick to end the game in a 2-2 draw.
Man of the Match ~ Steven Vanden Heuvel
03/03/09 District: Mayde Creek Loss 3-4 - District Record 2-4-1; Overall Record - 8-6-6
With major playoff implications on the line, the Mustangs came out flat for their match with Mayde Creek. The Rams took advantage early, scoring their first goal only two minutes into the match and didn't look back. Still not playing at full speed, the Mustangs quickly found themselves down 2-0. Josh Dowd cut into the first half lead for the Mustangs putting the score at 2-1, but the Rams were able to regain their two goal lead befor the half ended setting the score at 3-1. The shoot out continued in the second half. Things looked good when Steven Vanden Heuvel scored to put the Mustangs back within one at 3-2. But the Rams answered again pushing the score to 4-2. Will Childers scored to make the score 4-3, and Graham Wheeler blocked a Ram Penalty Kick to give the Mustangs a final chance. But the Mustangs were unable to come up with a forth goal to counter the early two goal lead created by the Rams. Man of the Match ~ Graham Wheeler

This match started the second round of District play, and for the Mustang Seniors, the last time they will play a district match against each of the KISD schools. The game was played with high intensity and both teams put forth a good show for the large number of supporters in attendance. Garrett Reinert made a couple key saves early for the Mustangs, And as the first half came to a close, it appered that the two teams would be level at half time. But with 50 seconds left on the clock, Christian Putallaz stripped the ball from a Cougar forward at midfield, and took a few dribbles forward before chipping the Cougar keep from long range. The Cougars pushed hard in the second half, and were rewarded for their efforts in the 60th minute leveling the match with a back post header on a corner kick. Daniel Tiegs hit the cross bar from a long volley for the Mustangs, and a Cinco Ranch forward got off a dangerous shot in the final 10 seconds of the match, but the two teams and their fans would have to settle for a draw. Man of the Match ~ Christian Putallaz

Ten minutes into the match, the Seven Lakes keeper was penalized for holding the ball longer than the alloted six seconds. Josh Dowd capitalized on the situation, placing his indirect kick into the side netting. And then shortly after, the Maveicks scored the game winner from a free kick. Man of the Match ~ Daniel Tiegs

The Mustangs played a solid first half of soccer against the Katy Tigers. Marshal Bond Crossed a ball into the box and Chuk Ifeagwu finished the opportunity out of the air with a very nice volley scoring the only goal of the half. With the lead in hand, the Mustangs were out worked in the second half of the match and the Tigers took charge. The Tigers work rate began to pay off about 15 minutes into the second half, and in the blink of an eye, the Tigers had taken a 3-1 lead. Ifeagwu finished his second goal of the match when the Katy keeper dropped a long throw in from Bond. But as the Mustangs pushed numbers forward looking for an equalizer, the Tigers took advantage of the space in the back and pushed the final score to 5-2. Man of the Match ~ Chuk Ifeagwu
