2008 Match Reports

03/07/08 Morton Ranch (District) 3-2 Loss

The Mustangs got off to a slow start in this important district match.  The Mavericks opened the scoring in the 20th minute.  From just outside the 18, an unmarked Maverick took advantage of a soft clearance from a corner kick and hit a well placed shot through the crowded box. Only nine minutes later, the Mavericks increased their lead.  Following in on a shot to the back post, the Mavericks out hustled the Mustangs to a rebound and scored their second goal of the match.  The Mustangs woke up and both teams battled hard for the remainder of the first half. But things got worse for the Mustangs in the second half before they got better.  Half way through the second half, The Mustangs mishandled a long throw in and conceded a third goal.  Slowly, the Mustangs began to fight their way back into the match, and in the 67th minute, Daniel Tiegs sent a nice through ball to free Marshal Bond on the left side.  Bond turned the ball inside and fired a shot just under the cross bar to breathe life back into the Mustangs. Capitalizing on the momentum, Bond played in another ball from the left side.  This time Stephen Adams scored the goal, and with only three minutes left, the Mustangs found themselves within range of tying the match.  In the final 2 minutes, the Mustangs were able to earn two corner kicks, one shot was blocked, and the other was headed just wide of the target.  Man of the Match ~ Marshal Bond.

03/03/08 Hastings (District) 3-2 Loss

A strong cold wind from the North blew across the Taylor field for the duration of this match.  But despite the difficult conditions both teams did their best to keep the ball on the ground and created several moments of quality soccer.  The Mustangs put forth a determined effort in the first half.  Playing against the wind, the Mustangs were able to maintain large periods of possession, and created several excellent scoring opportunities, but were unable to finish any of them.  Hastings had absorbed the pressure from the Mustangs, and with 3 minutes left in the half, the Bears used the wind and a long throw in to score a goal on the back post.  The Mustangs fought hard to start the second half, and were rewarded when Jake Reedy capitalized on a loose ball to score the tying goal.  But the bears were quick to strike back.  And in a 5 minute span they scored on 2 free kicks to quickly gain a 3-1 advantage.  With their backs against the wall, the Mustangs fought back and with 8 minutes left in the Match Chris Haynes finished off a cross from Peter Garrard to bring the Mustangs back within one.  The Mustangs put on a lot of pressure for the final 7 minutes of the match, but were unable to score an equalizer.  Man of the Match ~ Jake Reedy.

02/29/08 Alief Taylor(District) 2-1 Win

This match was dedicated to the 2008 THS Varsity Soccer Seniors.  The match began with a presentation and introduction of all of the seniors and their parents.  The action started quickly in this match.  All 3 goals were scored in the first half.  16 minutes into the match the Lions scored the opening goal on a quick counterattack.  The Mustangs regrouped, and attacked quickly.  Only 3 minutes later, Jake Reedy played a pass to Marshal Bond who would put the match back on level terms.  The Mustangs continued to push for another goal. And with just 2 minutes left in the half, Bond played in a cross from the left side to Stephen Adams who put the Mustangs in the lead.  But the Mustangs were unable to build on the lead.  4 yellow cards in the second half caused unplanned substitutions, and killed the Mustangs’ momentum.  As play went up and down the field in the second half, neither team was able to finish their chances.  Man of the Match ~ The Seniors - Stephen Adams, Patrick Armes, Blake Brown, Peter Garrard, Chris Haynes, Michael Lemke, Alex Philo, James Philo, Brian Williams

02/26/08 Katy (District) 1-1 Tie
The second round match between Taylor and Katy proved to be another close fought contest.  The Mustangs applied lots of offensive pressure in the first half.  In the 25th minute, the Mustangs scored the opening goal of the Match.  Marshal Bond played a free kick down the line to Josh Dowd.  Dowd received the ball and fired in a nice cross to Stephen Adams for the goal.  Things looked good for the Mustangs. By the end of the first half, they had put 9 shots on target compared to just one for the Tigers.  But the Tigers made some adjustments during halftime, and the second half became more of midfield struggle.  Both teams were only able to manage 2 shots on target each during the second half.  Despite the limited offense, the Tigers were able to equalize the match with a very well struck long range shot.  Man of the Match ~ Daniel Tiegs.

02/23/08 Mayde Creek (District) 0-1 Loss

The Mustangs and Rams played a tough fought contest to start the second round of district play.  Like the first match of the season, this game would be decided by one goal.  And like the first game of the season, it would be the Rams who would come out on top.  Both teams pushed hard on offense during the first half, but both defenses also played strong and the half ended without a goal.  The second half began the same way.  It appeared that both teams were committed to defense, and that goals would be tough to come by. But when a foul was called against the Mustangs at the top of the box, the Rams found a way to score.  After playing a solid match defensively, one moment of indecision allowed the Rams to score an easy goal with a quick restart that caught the Mustangs off guard.  Unfortunately, the rest of the match centered around the officiating.  Several strange calls and cards against both teams, continually stopped the match and forced substitutions, preventing the remainder of the game from developing any real flow for the final 15 minutes.
Man of the Match ~ Patrick Armes

02/19/08 Elsik (District) 1-1 Tie
The Mustangs got off to a very fast start in the last match of the first round of District Play.  Only 5 minutes into the match, Stephen Adams headed in the opening goal from a Marshal Bond throw in.  The Mustangs continued to put pressure on the Rams, and both Deiby Caicedo and Marshal Bond just missed on two quality goal scoring opportunities.  The Rams began to get more involved as the half drew to a close, but the Mustangs were determined on defense and the half ended 1-0.  The second half began with good strong midfield play from both teams, with limited scoring chances.  But at the 60 minute mark, the Mustangs were unable to fully clear the ball and Elsik took advantage.  Facing away from goal, the Elsik Ram ambitiously shot the bouncing half clearance just over Zack Potts and into the goal to score the Ram’s unconventional equalizer.  The game opened up for the final 20 minutes, and both teams were able to create break away goal scoring opportunities, but neither keeper was to be beaten again.  Man of the Match ~ Josh Dowd.

02/15/08 Cinco Ranch (District) 0-1 Loss
As is usually the case, the Taylor vs Cinco match proved to be a close, physical and hard fought match.  Cinco was able to control more of the play during the first half and created a few scoring opportunities.  The Mustang defense was playing strong and it appeared that they were going to escape the half unscathed with a chance to regroup at halftime.  But as the half drew closer, the Cougars applied a little more pressure, and after a great goal line clearance from Daniel Tiegs, the Cougars fired in a shot from the right side of the field with only 3 minutes left in the half.  The mustangs did regroup at half time and while maintaining a solid performance on defense, they also put forth a stronger offensive effort in the second half.  But were never able to put together the type of play necessary to earn an equalizer, or truly test the Cinco keeper.  Man of the Match ~ Daniel Tiegs.

02/12/08 Morton Ranch (District) 1-1 Tie
Both teams played with a lot of intensity in this match.  Unfortunately, the combination of high pressure, high intensity, and sports turf, did not create a beautiful game.  Both teams pressured hard and free time on the ball was definitely at a minimum.  As a result, neither team created much in the way of possession play.  The ball went up and down the field quickly, and was up in the air for extended periods of time.  For the first time in district play, the Mustangs gave up the opening goal.  About 17 minutes into the first half, the Mavericks played a ball into the Mustangs' box.  After a deflection, the ball landed at the feet of one of the Mavericks for the opening goal.  Both teams continued to battle hard.  As the half approached, it appeared that the Mustangs would go to the locker room down by a goal.  But with 3 minutes left, the Mustangs crossed a ball into the box.  The ball took a high bounce, and Will Walker was fouled in the box while attempting to win the header.  Stephen Adams stepped up to convert the pk and put the Mustangs back on level terms.  The second half continued in the same fashion as the first.  Both teams committed to defense and limited the opportunities on goal.  The Mustangs were able to create a few good chances on goal, including a one on one break away with the Mavericks keeper, but that shot went high and wide, and this match was set to end as a tie.  Man of the Match ~ Sam Sandarusi.

02/08/08 Hastings (District) 0-0 Tie
After scoring 4 goals in their previous match, the Mustangs could not find the back of the net against the Hastings Bears.  Both teams battled hard in the midfield, and showed sound judgment and composure in defense.  The Mustangs pushed hard to start the match, and it seemed like a goal was just a matter of time.  But somewhere around the 25 minute mark, a momentum swing lead to the Bears closing out the half as the more offensive team.  The Mustangs regained their spark in the second half, and put together a lot of offensive pressure, but still no goal.  With about ten minutes left in the match the Hastings keeper denied Marshal Bond from close range.  Energized by the save, the Bears begin to mount an attack of their own.  And for the final tem minutes, the match went up and down the field.  Zack Potts made a breakaway save to prevent the Bears from snatching a late victory.  Man of the Match ~ Daniel Tiegs.

02/05/08 Alief Taylor (District) 4-1 Win
It took two days and two fields, but the Mustangs finally defeated the Lions in the third district match.  The scoring started early.  Only 2 minutes into the match, James Philo headed in a long throw in from Marshal Bond.  The Mustangs came close to scoring on a couple of more plays, but it was the Lions who finished their lone chance tying the score.  Shortly after, a strong cold wind and rain came in and 10 minutes of play was wasted battling the elements.  Finally, with 12:13 left in the half, the game was called.  Play did not resume until the next day at the new venue, Crump Stadium.  The game started with 12:13 on the clock, and neither team was able to notch a goal during the shortened period.  The scoring opened up in the second half.  14 minutes in, Stephen Adams scored off of a cross from Bond.  Then in the 71st minute, James Sadler set up Brian Williams for another Mustang goal.  And in the 76th minute, Peter Garrard capped the scoring by placing in a ball from Bond.  Man of the Match ~ Marshal Bond.

02/01/08 Katy (District) 1-0 Win
The Mustangs earned their first district win over the very determined and emotional Katy Tigers.  Similar to the last match, the Mustangs got off to a good start.  And 14 minutes in, Deiby Caicedo caused a Katy turnover.  James Philo recovered the ball and dropped a short pass to Marshal Bond, who sent a pass to Stephen Adams at the top of the Tigers box.  Adams eluded the defender with one touch, and then placed the ball past the outstretched Katy keeper to score the game’s only goal.  Shortly after, in the 21st minute, Brian Williams was dealt a hard blow on the sideline.  After turning with the ball, a Katy player charged in with his shoulder knocking the air out of the recent Mustang sub.  Still upset about an earlier debateable noncall, the Katy sideline erupted.  Surprisingly, there were Tiger players and coaches yelling at the injured player to hurry and get up and off the field, as well as using the time to argue the refs earlier decision.  The emotions seemed to spread on to the field, and as the Mustangs adjusted to the unplanned substitution, the Tigers picked up their intensity as the first half came to a close.  The intensity carried over, and the Tigers started the second half the same way they had ended the first.  But the Mustangs worked hard in the midfield, and the defense made up of Daniel Tiegs, Jake Reedy, Christian Putallaz, and Peter Garrard were up to the challenge.  And despite the Tigers earning a dangerous late free kick with 25 seconds left, both Mustang keepers, Garrett Reinert and Zack Potts, left the match with clean sheets.  Man of the Match ~ Peter Garrard.

01/29/08 Mayde Creek (District) 1-2 Loss

The Mustangs got off to a strong start at the beginning of the match.  Within the first 12 minutes the Mustangs had already earned 4 shots on target.  The early pressure paid off in the fourteenth minute.  Marshal Bond quickly fired a long throw in to Stephen Adams who headed the ball over the Ram’s keeper to score the Mustangs’ first district goal.  Shortly after the goal, momentum began to swing, and the Rams began to assert their influence on the match and the play began to flow up and down the field presenting both teams with scoring opportunities.  Shortly before half time, the Rams’ sent a cross past the far post. A quick shot resulted in a foot save from the Mustang keeper who was called for a pk as he attempted to recover the loose ball.  The Rams converted the pk and evened the score.  The Rams held the advantage through most of the second half.  Both teams created chances, and with 15 minutes left in the match, the Rams broke loose on a counter attack, and a long through ball set up a one vs one with the Mustang keeper that resulted in the winning goal of the match. Man of the Match ~ Stephen Adams

01/25/08 Tomball (Preseason) 1-2 Loss

On another cold and wet night, the Mustangs had a difficult time adjusting to the Tomball home field. The field was in excellent condition and was a great size for soccer. But in the first half the Mustangs did not adjust to the extra width and played too direct. In contrast, The Cougars worked the ball around nicely between their defense and midfielders, and used the width of the field to spread and stretch the Mustang defense. The cougars took advantage of this time and scored 2 goals in a 10 minute stretch. The first shot bounced of the post and off the keeper, and the Mustangs conceded a pk for the second. In the second half, the Mustangs looked more comfortable, and began to posses the ball better and started finding seems in the Tomball defense. These seems led to several shots on goal for the Mustangs. But the Tomball keeper and woodwork kept the ball out of the net for the Cougars. It wasn't until the 77th minute, when Daniel Tiegs made a run from his sweeper position to assist Deiby Caicedo, that the Mustangs were able to score their first goal. Man of the Match ~ Daniel Tiegs.

01/15/08 Humble (Preseason) 7-1 Win

Despite the cold rain and sloppy field, the Mustangs were in top form for their first game following the Mustang Classic Tournament. The Mustangs hit the net early and often in the first half. Deiby Caicedo opened the scoring campaign by heading in a free kick from Marshal Bond only 30 seconds into the match. 3 minutes later, Bond scored a goal of his own. Then in the 21st minute, Caicedo played Chris Haynes in on a break away for the Mustangs 3rd goal. Brian Williams added his name to the scoring sheet 7 minutes later, and Blake Brown assisted Brian Merck in scoring the 5th goal of the half. With just 3 minutes left until the half, Alex Philo fired a shot that the Humble keeper couldn't hold and sent the Mustangs into half time with a 6-0 lead. The second half started similar to the first, and after only 2 minutes, Brown fired in the Mustang's last goal of the match. Christian Putallaz, Jake Reedy, Sam Sandarusi, Daniel Tiegs, Patrick Armes, and Peter Garrard all put in strong performances on defense but with 7 minutes left in the match, a foul at the top of the 18 set up the Widcats with a free kick that resulted in the second goal the Mustangs have conceded this preseason. Man of the Match ~ Blake Brown.

01/07/08 Deer Park (Scrimmage) 1-0 Win

The Mustangs got off to a good start in their final scrimmage of the 2008 season. Only 10 minutes into the first half, Peter Garrard fired a shot on goal that was too strong for the Deer Park keeper to handle. Wilfrido Martinez followed up on the spill and put the Mustangs up by one. The Mustangs continued to apply pressure for the remainder of the first half and nearly doubled their lead when Marshal Bond's free kick bounced off the post. But the first half ended with only the one goal scored. Midfield play deteriorated in the second half, and both the Mustangs and the Deer found themselves with counter attacks and opportunities on goal. But the Mustang defense held strong, earning the shutout, and securing the win. Man of the Match ~ Wilfrido Martinez.

Five different players found the net for the Mustangs in the 2008 Alumni Scrimmage. Maurico Ruiz made a couple of nice saves for the Alumni, and a tightly contested first half ended scoreless. Chris Haynes broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half when he placed in a goal at the back post off of a pass by James Philo. Just 8 minutes later, Hayne's shot rebounded to Philo who finished the opportunity to put the Mustangs up by 2. In the 62 minute of the match, Stephen Adams started a counter attack, and layed the ball off to Will Walker who chipped in another goal for the Mustangs. Just 4 minutes later, the Mustangs scored their 4th unanswered goal, when Brian Williams beat the keeper to a through ball from Deiby Caicedo. In the 73 minute, Kevin Rayo Headed in a cross from Thomas Horscroft to put the Alumin on the board. 3 minutes after that, Josh Dowd collected a loose ball at the corner of the box and fired in a volley for the final goal of the match.
