2/5/10 THS 0 Cinco Ranch 1 (11 - 4) (0 - 1)
The Mustangs opened district play with a terrific performance against a talented Cougar Team in a well played, spirited match. Both teams suffered from questionable decisions from the officials which were a stain on an otherwise excellant match. The Stangs controlled much of the first half out shooting the Cougars 8 - 5 and 15 - 11 overall. Kelsey Fay had a mini break away shot early in the match that the Cougar keeper saved. Hanna Silverberg hit a nice driven ball right to the keeper about 15 minutes into the match. But the most dangerous chance came with about 10 minutes left in the first half when Rachel Murray blasted a shot over the keeper and it appeared to be a goal. The officials ruled that the shot hit the under side of the crossbar, bounced on the line and then bounced off the cross bar a second time and once again hit the line. But that the ball never actually crossed the goal line. Cinco Ranch had one dangerous shot that came from 35 yards out. As the high arching shot looked for the net, Courtney Craig jumped up and blocked it. Early in the second half, Murray had a 1 v 1 opportunity with the keeper. But the Cinco Ranch keeper made a great block on the shot as the two collided to keep the match scoreless. The match became more physical as play continued and the intensity increased. Adrienne Perkins nearly tied the match when she put a header off a Kellie Walker free kick on frame, but the Cougar keeper made a diving block and then a Cinco Ranch defender cleared the ball out of bounds before the Mustangs could finish the rebound. In the last few minutes, Rachel Murray found the ball at her feet about 25 yarsd out and went to goal. As she entered the penalty box a Cinco Ranch defender slid from behind Murray, hitting Murray's right leg and knocked her off stride which allowed the Cinco Ranch keeper to collect the ball. Three minutes later Fowler picks off a pass 25 yards out and fires a hard low shot to the far post for the second goal. Once again, the Mustang defense had an outstanding performance. The wind picked up on the second day of the tournament which made it even colder than it was on the first day. The Mustangs heated up the Lady Longhorn net with two first half goals and the defense shut Dobie down not only a single shot in the match. The strong north wind pushed normally great passes over the end line for goals kicks but the Mustangs kept working. The Stangs were rewarded in the 17th minute when Adrienne Perkins sent a long through ball that Haley Silverberg outraced a defender to and then slid a shot by the on coming keeper. In the 25th minute, Sarah Harlan used the wind to bend her corner kick into the net for the second goal. In the final tune-up for the regular season, the Mustangs were firing on all cylinders as they defeated the Lady Bucs. Rachel Murray scored the first three goals to pace the Stangs to the victory. The first goal was created by a nice bit of ball work by Kelsey Fay, as she beat a defender and then slotted a cross to Murray for a sliding goal. The second goal started with an Amber Kuzma clearance to Murray, who gather the ball and the outraced a defender to the box before blasting a shot over the keeper. The third goal came off a Sarah Harlan corner kick that Murray headed home. The Mustangs scored the three goals in first eight minutes of the match. Later in the first half, Eileen Dowd was pushed from behind in the box and Hannah Silverberg knocked home the PK for a 4 - 0 half time advantage. The Stang's midfield, led by Betsy Fowler and Amber Kuzma, controlled the ball for much of the match and the defense, especially Kellie Walker, did a great job of supporting the attack. In the second half, Rosie Fryer headed in a Sarah Harlan corner kick. Later, Campbell Busfield drives down the right side of the box and puts a cross through to the far post where a sliding Kaela Demmerle pounds the ball into the net. Brittani Kobold finishes the scoring when she collects a Haley Silverberg cross and out battles a defender before firing a shot past the keeper. The Mustangs battled last year's State Finalist for 60 minutes, creating a number of scoring chances but were unable to find the net. Kelsey Fay's foul in the box in the first half should have given the Mustangs a PK. However, neither official was in a position to see exactly where the foul occurred. Campbell Busfield and Kaela Demmerle both had strong shots that were saved by the keeper. The Lady Highlander's first goal was scored by a nice bit of ball control and a well placed shot. The second half saw a Rachel Murray drive saved by the keeper and several free kick opportunities that did not find the net. Betsy Fowler did an excellant job of winning balls in the midfield and putting the Stangs back on the attack. The Lady Highlanders second goal was off a breakaway to the left of the goal. - Mustang of the Match - Betsy Fowler
1/2/10 - THS 1 Tomball 1
Taylor opened the 2010 season with a solid performance against the Lady Cougars. The Mustangs defense and midfield were particularly strong in limiting Tomball to just 2 shots on goal. Defenders Tori Grimes and Sarah Harlan were standouts defensively, holding the Lady Cougar forwards in check. Despite having a large shooting and corner kick advantage, the Mustangs found themselves trailing by a goal midway through the second half after the Lady Cougars struck with a long free kick. The Mustangs evened the score when Rosie Fryer flicked on a Betsy Fowler throw in to Tori Grimes who out musculed a defender and beat the keeper to the near post. The Mustangs kept the pressure on the Lady Cougars, generating three more shots in the final two minutes but could not find the winner before time expired. - Mustang of the Match - Tori Grimes
